1.
“Here’s Johnny”. Nicholson free styled this line as homage to Ed McMahon’s catch phrase for introducing Johnny Carson on the famous night time talk show. It was the least threatening way to announce himself he could think of. The irony of the line makes the scene even more terrifying. -
2.
“I know”. When Princes Leia says ‘I love you,’ Ford’s character, the grimey smuggler Han Solo, was originally supposed to reply “I love you too.” Ford didn’t think the line fit his character so Lucas told him to say whatever he thought felt right. The line “I know” fits so perfectly no one would ever question its place in the movie. -
3.
Cinderalla Story. This entire iconic scene, where Murray tells himself a story about a long shot golfer going on to win the masters, was unscripted and put together on the spot by Murray. -
4.
Farting Wife. Robin Williams is renowned for his improvisational ability. It’s just one of the reasons he will be missed forever. In this scene, the entire story about his wife passing gas and waking herself was ad-libbed by Williams on the spot. Matt Damon’s ensuing laugh is 100% authentic. -
5.
Bigger boat. In the scene where Scheider’s character first sees the massive shark, he turns and says to the ship captain, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” The scene was completely unscripted and is one of the most recognizable movie quotes ever spoken. -
6.
Can you hear me now? In the scene where Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) cuts off the officer’s ear, he holds it up and says, “Hey, what’s going on? You hear that?” The script didn’t include any dialogue for the scene after the removal of the ear. Madsen’s interjection was so twisted and perfect for the character, Quentin Tarantino left it in and it has since become one of the most memorable scenes in one of Tarantino’s most praised works. -
7.
Busted in the barn. In this scene, Damon and Tom Hanks’ characters are passing the down time waiting for the Germans to attack. Damon tells a funny and touching story about his oldest brother (who has been killed in the movie) getting caught kissing a girl in a barn. The entire story was made up on the spot by Damon. It’s a poignant and perfectly timed gem of acting. -
8.
A nice chianti. While telling the story of eating a man, Hopkins makes a disturbing hiss. The hiss was originally done as a joke, but Jodi Foster reacted so strongly that the director kept it in the film. This scene has been parodied so many times it’s shocking it was originally unplanned. -
9.
You talking to me? For this scene, the script simply said “Travis talks to himself in the mirror.” The entire scene is improvised by Deniro and the line, “You talking to me?” is now one of the most frequently quoted of all time. -
10.
Here kitty kitty. The cat that Brando infamously strokes in the movie was never supposed to be there. No one has addressed exactly where the cat “il gatto” came from, but there is no denying it’s place in movie history. Villains with feline friends is a thing because of this movie. -
11.
One shot. The scene was actually staged and rehearsed to be an epic whip vs. sword battle, but an ill Harrison Ford wasn’t up to performing the full scene. Instead, he and director Steven Spielberg came up with the now iconic gun ending.
